Senior Mechanical and Controls Engineer, Robotics – Chowbotics Food Robotics

Chowbotics is at the forefront of bringing automation into the food industry as part of DoorDash. We develop and ship robots that enable convenience through food automation. Our robots are often characterized as compact micro-restaurants that can provide customizable, fresh, healthy meals in closer proximity to consumers than any other food source. We are a team of engineers and manufacturing innovators that have exciting plans for scaling and developing new and more advanced food robots.

The Senior Mechanical and Controls Engineer (Robotics) will collaborate with engineering and other functions to develop designs for mechanical components and systems using Solidworks CAD models. You will also design, test and report on different control algorithms for the various mechanical stages in the robotic system, with software/firmware implementation support from Robotics Integration Firmware Engineer.

What You’ll Do

  • Design robotic motion systems and sub-systems for our next generation food robot
  • Write control algorithms to control the motion stages of the robotic systems you design
  • Define requirements specifications and develop engineering design specifications.
  • Perform thorough engineering analysis to develop reliable designs for complex robotic systems
  • Identify motors, actuators, and sensors based on their performance, reliability metrics, and cost.
  • Size motors, bearings and other critical motion components based on design criteria and business goals
  • Create and revise solid models and detailed drawings of complex components and assemblies from design layouts, marked prints, and verbal instructions.
  • Operate within a product lifecycle management environment to specify parts and assemblies, create product structure, and receive/complete tasks.
  • Establish component tolerances in accordance with manufacturing capabilities.
  • Apply design for manufacturability, design for assembly, and design for field serviceability concepts to emerging designs.
  • Perform tolerance analysis and validation.
  • Participate in Engineering and Design Validation testing activities.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware and software engineers on design, development, and testing


What We’re Looking For

  • ME and at least seven (7) years of industry experience in robotics or automated machine design including the integration of electronics, firmware, and motion control.
  • Masters or equivalent industry experience in control theory
  • Hands-on experience designing / driving production motion platforms (requirement). You must have made something that moved before. Multiple axes = multiple points.
  • Experience (outside of MatLAB) designing, implementing and tuning motion control systems on production software and hardware
  • Requirements include capability to complete static, dynamic, vibration, structural and thermal analysis.
  • A positive and success-oriented individual who is familiar with the latest development/production and rapid-prototype methodologies.
  • Expert with bearing/motion component selection and design.
  • Expertise in selecting motors, sensors and other electrical components used in robotics and automated machinery.
  • Experience with Solid Modeling and Finite Element Analysis required
  • Experience with Solidworks preferred.
  • Understanding of industry standards and compliance standards.
  • Expert-level understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Experience with plastic part design, 3D printing, and injection molding tooling design.
  • A highly motivated driver of the concepts of design for manufacturability, design for testability, design for assembly, and design for field serviceability.
  • Ability to manage time and work effectively while being self-motivated.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with recursive Bayesian estimators like Kalman/Particle filters, sensor fusion, and/or controls is a major bonus
  • Experience specifying SW and Controls requirements is a plus
  • Experience coding C++ or Python
  • Experience working with some sort of DAQ and MatLAB/Octave at a minimum
  • Previous experience designing a robotic end-effector
